Below are the latest developments in the international job and study markets, as well as updates for the IELTS test.

The Latest IELTS News
As of March 2025, there is conflicting information regarding the writing instruments permitted in the IELTS paper-based exam.
IDP’s official IELTS website states that for the paper-based Writing test candidates may use either a pen or an HB pencil to complete their answers.
However, an IDP Facebook post dated three months ago mentions a “Pen-Only Policy” effective from January 25, 2025, mandating the use of pens for Listening, Reading, and Writing sections.
Given these discrepancies, it’s advisable for candidates prepare for both Scenarios.
Readability of your essays and answers is important so you should familiarise yourself with writing in both pencil and black ballpoint pen during practice sessions to ensure adaptability on test day.

International Employment
Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) – United Kingdom
Effective January 29, 2025, the HCPC has implemented new English language proficiency requirements for international applicants seeking registration. Prospective registrants must now provide evidence of their English language skills through approved assessments, such as the IELTS, to ensure they meet the necessary standards for professional practice in the UK.
Recruitment of Overseas Teachers
The UK continues to actively recruit overseas-trained teachers (OTTs) to address domestic shortages, particularly from Commonwealth countries such as those in the Caribbean and Africa.
This initiative presents opportunities for qualified teachers from these regions to secure employment in the UK education sector
Studying Abroad
Why Now Is the Right Time to Look Beyond the U.S. for Study Abroad
March brought unsettling news for many aspiring international students: the U.S. government has frozen funding for major study abroad programs like Fulbright and Gilman, while colleges such as Bunker Hill Community College have cancelled their 2025 overseas placements due to immigration uncertainties.
It’s not just about funding. Even universities like Brown have advised students and staff not to travel abroad, fearing visa restrictions and re-entry problems. That means students are being left in limbo—unable to travel, study, or plan ahead confidently.
But for IELTS test takers, there’s good news...
The UK, Canada, and Australia remain open—and in demand.
These Commonwealth countries continue to welcome international students, with strong visa routes and growing demand in key sectors like health, education, and technology.
Canada has increased its 2025 targets for international study permits and offers clear post-study work pathways.
Australia now requires a higher IELTS score (6.0 minimum) for student visas—clear proof of rising standards and high-quality opportunities.
The UK continues to recruit overseas teachers and healthcare professionals, and is actively simplifying parts of its visa system to attract skilled migrants.
If you’ve been preparing for the IELTS, this may be the best time to focus on destinations that are not only welcoming, but increasingly competitive.
In an unpredictable global environment, one thing is clear: your English test opens more than just American doors.
