Part 1 Questions: Gifts

Question 1: Do you enjoy giving or receiving gifts?

Answer: “Honestly, I think I enjoy giving gifts more. There’s something really satisfying about choosing something you know someone will love and then seeing their reaction. It’s like—well, it feels more rewarding, you know?”

Question 2: What kinds of gifts do people typically give in your culture?

Answer: “Oh, that’s a good one. Well, in my culture, people often give practical gifts, like clothes or gadgets, especially for special occasions like birthdays or weddings. Sometimes, though, people like to give money in an envelope—it’s considered both practical and respectful.”

Question 3: Is it important to give gifts on special occasions?

Answer: “Yeah, absolutely! Gifts are like a way to mark the occasion and show someone you’re thinking about them. Even if it’s just a small token, it makes people feel appreciated. And, I mean, who doesn’t enjoy receiving a little surprise, right?”

Part 2 Task: Describe a Gift You Received

Question:

Describe a gift you received that was special to you.

You should say:

  • What the gift was
  • Who gave it to you
  • When you received it

…and explain why it was special.

Sample Answer:
“Right, so one of the most special gifts I’ve ever received was a watch—my parents gave it to me when I graduated. It’s a really simple, elegant design with a leather strap, and they even had my initials engraved on the back, which made it feel super personal.

I remember getting it just after the graduation ceremony. They handed me this small box, and honestly, I wasn’t expecting anything. But when I opened it, wow—it felt like such a thoughtful and symbolic gift.

The thing is, it’s not just a watch; it’s what it represents. My parents wanted to give me something practical, sure, but also something that showed how proud they were. Every time I wear it, I’m reminded of that day and their encouragement, especially during my studies when things got tough.

So, yeah, it’s definitely one of my most treasured possessions—not because of the value but because of the meaning behind it.”

Part 3 Questions: Discussing Broader Gift Topics

Question 1: Why do people give gifts?

Answer: “Well, I think people give gifts for all sorts of reasons. It could be to celebrate an occasion, show appreciation, or just make someone happy. Gifts are like a way of saying, ‘I care about you’ or ‘I’m thinking of you.’ And, you know, it doesn’t always have to be about the gift itself—sometimes it’s more about the thought or effort behind it.”

Question 2: What makes a gift meaningful?

Answer: “That’s a good question. For me, a meaningful gift is one that reflects the giver’s thoughtfulness. It doesn’t have to be expensive at all—sometimes a handwritten note or something handmade can mean a lot. It’s really about the connection between the giver and the recipient, like when a gift reminds you of a shared memory or inside joke.”

Question 3: Are there cultural differences in gift-giving?

Answer: “Oh, definitely! Different cultures have unique traditions when it comes to gift-giving. For example, in some Asian cultures, like in China, people often give money in red envelopes during festivals like Lunar New Year. It’s a symbol of good luck and prosperity. On the other hand, in Western cultures, there’s more emphasis on wrapping gifts and surprising people. Even the type of gift can vary—a gift that’s considered thoughtful in one culture might not be appropriate in another. It’s all about understanding the customs and showing respect.”
