IELTS recognition passes 13,500 organisations
The official IELTS websites have been updated to show that IELTS is now accepted by more than 13,500 universities, governments, employers and professional bodies worldwide. The figure published previously was 12,500. The British Council recognition pages now give the higher total, and IDP lists coverage across more than 150 countries.
The IELTS partners describe the test as accepted by more organisations than any other English language test, and by more governments than any other. For candidates the practical point is the range of destinations a single sitting can support. One result can be used for a university application, a professional registration and a visa application at the same time, subject to the requirements each receiving body sets for itself.

Recognising organisations set their own minimum band scores, and some specify whether they will accept an IELTS Online result or a One Skill Retake result. Where the delivery options now stand
Further to our reports in May and June on changes to IELTS test delivery, the position published on ielts.org is now settled. It is worth restating because the wait for results differs by delivery mode, and that difference is larger than most candidates expect.
At a test centre you can sit IELTS on computer, answering the Listening, Reading and Writing sections on screen, with results in one to five days. The Writing on Paper option lets you take the test on computer while completing the Writing tasks by hand on an IELTS answer sheet, with results within five days. The Test Report Form does not record that Writing on Paper was used. IELTS on paper is still available in some locations, with results after 13 days. IELTS Online is available for IELTS Academic in a growing number of countries, with results in six to eight days, and each receiving organisation decides for itself whether it will accept an online result.
The Speaking section is conducted with a trained IELTS examiner in every delivery mode. Any test taken for UK Visas and Immigration purposes must be sat at an official IELTS test centre, where identity is verified and the whole test is supervised.
| If you have a fixed application deadline, work backwards from the result date rather than the test date. The gap between computer delivery and paper delivery is more than a week, which is enough to miss a closing date. |
The wider English language testing sector
Remote tests continue to add supervision requirements
Two at-home tests tightened their monitoring rules during August. CAEL confirmed that every CAEL Online sitting scheduled on or after 4 September 2026 requires a second camera. Candidates set this up on a smartphone through a browser application, giving proctors a multi-angle view of the room during the test.
Duolingo now treats the secondary camera, the 360 degree room scan and the ear scan as standard parts of its security check. Its published setup guidance asks candidates to provide a computer, a smartphone, a private room they can be alone in for the full session, and a clear desk, with the phone left in position throughout.
A test taken at home makes the candidate responsible for the room, the hardware and the connection, and a setup problem can invalidate a result whatever the standard of English. At an IELTS test centre the invigilation, identity checks, equipment and timing are handled for you.

DAAD scholarship applicants gain another test option
The German Academic Exchange Service now lists the Duolingo English Test among the English language certificates that can be submitted with applications to its scholarship programmes. IELTS, Cambridge English, TOEFL iBT, TOEIC, PTE Academic and onSET English also appear on that list.
A wider choice is a good outcome for applicants. Two cautions apply. DAAD asks applicants to check whether specific certification is required for their own country of origin, and a scholarship application is a separate process from admission to a German university, which sets its own rules on language evidence. IELTS is accepted at both stages by a large number of German institutions, which is why many applicants take it once rather than sitting a second test later in the process.
International migration news for IELTS candidates
United Kingdom
A new statement of changes to the Immigration Rules, HC 259, was laid before Parliament on 9 July and took effect on 30 July and 3 August 2026. The Home Office describes most of the package as technical, correcting cross references and making wording consistent between routes.
Two points are relevant to students. From 3 August, a child born in the UK while a parent holds Graduate route permission can apply as a dependant and will normally be granted permission in line with that parent. Separately, an Electronic Travel Authorisation can now be refused or cancelled where the applicant has received a suspended sentence of at least 12 months, bringing ETA suitability into line with the wider rules. Applications made before 3 August are decided under the rules in force on 2 August.
The settlement reforms consulted on as earned settlement have still not been laid before Parliament. That consultation closed on 12 February and the Home Secretary has pointed to autumn 2026 for the main changes. The existing five year and ten year routes to indefinite leave to remain are unchanged and remain in force. The separate B2 English requirement for settlement, which we covered in June, is already written into the rules for applications made on or after 26 March 2027.
On the Home Office English Language Testing procurement, the government tender notice gives an estimated award decision date of 16 November 2026, with the contract expected to begin in December 2026. The IELTS partners withdrew from that process in March over concerns about fully remote delivery.
Canada
The proposed regulation that would allow IRCC to require language test results from certain International Mobility Program work permit applicants has still not appeared in the Canada Gazette. The department’s forward regulatory plan entry, last updated on 7 April 2026, targets pre-publication in Canada Gazette Part I in spring or summer 2026, followed by a 30 day comment period. That window is closing without publication.
IRCC states the aim as improving the reliability, transparency and efficiency of language assessment under the programme, using results from a designated third party organisation. Provinces and territories were consulted in February 2025 and private sector stakeholders in November 2025. Nothing is in force, and the department has not confirmed which streams would be covered.

Results are accepted for two years by most Canadian authorities, so a test taken now would still be usable if a requirement is introduced during 2027. |
Australia
The government confirmed on 3 July that the National Planning Level for new international student commencements in 2027 will stay at 295,000, the same figure as 2026, and indicative provider level allocations were finalised during July. No active provider will receive a lower allocation in 2027 than it received in 2026, TAFE students are exempt, and priority visa processing continues for Pacific and Timor-Leste students and for Australian government scholarship holders.
Student and Temporary Graduate visa charges rose by 25 per cent on 1 July 2026. Commencements are running below the planning level, and the government reports them as 8 per cent lower in 2026 than in the same period of 2025. The practical reading for applicants is that the planning level is not the constraint at present, so a complete and well evidenced application matters more than the timing of your submission within the year.
What this month means for you
The direction of travel across the sector is towards tighter supervision and clearer proof of identity, whether that arrives as a second camera in a bedroom or as a government requirement that a test be sat at a supervised centre. IELTS candidates are largely insulated from that shift, because the test centre model already provides what regulators are asking for.
On recognition, the position has improved. Passing 13,500 recognising organisations widens the number of applications a single result can support, which matters most to candidates applying across more than one country. If Canada does introduce language testing for open work permits, holding a valid result before the rule lands would remove the timing risk entirely.
If you are applying to the UK, watch for the settlement rules in the autumn. If you are applying to Australia, the planning level is stable for 2027 and the higher visa charges are already in force. In every case, check the delivery mode and the minimum band score your receiving organisation requires before you book a test date.
