There are three kinds of letters that you might be asked to write in the IELTS Writing test: formal, informal, or semi-formal.
The below is an example of a formal question, together with an analysis of the question and some key tips for answering.
Task 1 Question:
You are looking for a job in another country and have decided to contact an employment agency.
Write a letter to an international employment agency. In your letter:
- explain why you are writing
- describe the kind of jobs you are looking for
- ask questions about the process and fees involved
Understanding the Question:
In this task, you need to write a formal letter to an employment agency, outlining your request for help in finding a job abroad. As with all Task 1 questions, you should write 150 words. Since this is a formal question you should start with Dear Sir/Madam.
It is also important to ensure that you write about more than one kind of job and ask more than one question as the second and third bullet points contain plurals. Asking only one question, for example, will limit you to a band 5.0 for Task Achievement, since you will have only partially answered the question.
Key Tips for Answering:
- Maintain a formal tone: This is a professional letter, so use polite language and an appropriate format.
- Clearly state your purpose: Begin by explaining why you are contacting the agency.
- Provide relevant details: Describe your preferred job role and industry to help the agency understand your needs.
- Include specific queries: Ask questions about their services, the application process, and any associated costs.
Model Answer:
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to inquire about your services for finding employment opportunities abroad. I am currently looking for roles in software development or digital marketing, as I have experience in both fields. My preference would be for positions in tech companies, but I am open to exploring opportunities in other industries as well.
Could you please provide me with more details about the application process for these types of jobs? I would also like to know if your agency assists with securing work visas, and what the associated costs might be for your services. Additionally, could you give me an estimated timeframe for job placement?
