Model IELTS Writing Task 2 Question

Some people think that governments should spend more money on education than on recreation and sports. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Model Task 2 Answer

Investments in education and recreation play a crucial role in shaping society, but the debate over prioritising one over the other continues to divide opinions. This essay explores why governments should prioritise education over recreation and sports, while acknowledging the value of balance in public spending.

A well-funded education system is fundamental to the development of a skilled and knowledgeable workforce. Education equips individuals with the tools to contribute meaningfully to their communities, fostering innovation and economic growth. For instance, countries with robust education systems often enjoy higher levels of prosperity, as seen in nations like Finland and South Korea. Allocating more resources to education enables governments to address inequalities by providing access to quality schooling for all citizens, regardless of their socio-economic background.

In contrast, recreation and sports, while important, do not have the same transformative impact on society as education. Although these activities promote physical and mental well-being, they often cater to specific groups and may not contribute as directly to long-term societal progress. For example, building stadiums and funding professional teams can be costly, benefiting a relatively small proportion of the population. Redirecting these funds towards education could yield more equitable benefits.

However, the importance of recreation and sports should not be entirely dismissed. These activities can foster social cohesion, encourage healthy lifestyles, and even serve as a source of national pride. Balancing investments in both areas is crucial to ensuring a holistic approach to societal development. For instance, promoting school sports programs could bridge the gap between the two sectors, allowing young people to enjoy the benefits of physical activity while prioritising their education.

Ultimately, governments should prioritise education because of its far-reaching impacts on individual and societal development. However, recognising the complementary role of recreation and sports ensures a balanced approach to public spending. By focusing on education as the cornerstone of progress while integrating recreational activities into the system, governments can maximise the overall benefits for society.

Approach to the Essay

Introduction: The introduction sets the stage for the discussion by acknowledging the importance of both education and recreation. It outlines the position taken—that education should take precedence while recognising the value of balance.

Body Paragraph 1: The first body paragraph focuses on the significance of education. It highlights how education contributes to economic growth, innovation, and social equality, using examples of successful countries to support the argument. This paragraph establishes the primary rationale for prioritising education.

Body Paragraph 2: The second body paragraph examines the limitations of recreation and sports in comparison to education. While acknowledging their benefits, it explains why these areas do not have the same wide-reaching impact. The argument is supported with examples of costly investments that benefit only a limited portion of the population.

Body Paragraph 3: The third body paragraph provides a counterpoint, emphasising the complementary role of recreation and sports. It argues for a balanced approach and suggests integrating recreational activities within educational systems to optimise benefits.

Conclusion: The conclusion reiterates the stance that education should be the priority but also recognises the value of recreation and sports. It ties the essay together by advocating for a holistic approach to public spending.

This structure ensures clarity, coherence, and balance, addressing both sides of the issue while maintaining a clear position throughout.
