Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

You should write at least 150 words.

The three pie charts illustrate the spending patterns of UK citizens in 2015 across three categories, segmented into three age group.

A clear trend is observed where spending on restaurants and hotels decreases with age. The Under 30 group allocates almost half of their budget to this category, while the 50-64 group spends about one-third. Conversely, spending on entertainment increases with age, starting at one-third in the Under 30 group and rising to 40% in the 50-64 group. Spending on food and drinks, while the smallest category across all age groups, shows a gradual increase from 20% in the Under 30 group to 25% in the 50-64 group.

In summary, while all age groups prioritise spending on restaurants and hotels, older age groups tend to allocate more of their budget to entertainment and food and drinks compared to younger individuals. This shift in spending priorities reflects changing preferences and lifestyles as people age.

Breakdown of Key Features in our Task 1 Essay

What makes this a high-scoring essay? …

Clear Introduction: The essay starts with a concise introduction that explains what the pie charts illustrate. This sets the context for the reader.

Specific Details: The essay includes specific percentages and comparisons to give a detailed analysis of the data. It blends exact figures with less precise fractions to give variety in reporting and to avoid appearing too mechanical in the description (a band five characteristic)

Comparison and Trends: The essay compares the spending habits of different age groups, pointing out how spending on certain categories changes with age. This comparison is essential for showing trends and making the data meaningful.

Overview: A general trend is provided at the end of the essay, highlighting the key changes in spending patterns across age groups without delving into specific percentages. This helps to give a broad understanding and acts as a kind of conclusion.
