This mock IELTS Academic Task 1 question and answer tackles a single table question.

Remember, the main idea when writing an answer to this kind of question is to write enough detail so that someone can recreate the table based on your essay, but not so robotically and precisely that they can include every number with precision.

We structured this essay in the following way…

1st Body Paragraph: a paraphrase of the question plus an overview

2nd Body Paragraph: describes the data for the North American nations

3rd Body Paragraph: describes the data for the UK, New Zealand and Australia

A Good Example Answer For IELTS Writing Task 1

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

The table shows how five countries ranked on a global scale for their health care systems.

The table shows how English-speaking nations’ healthcare systems can be compared on a range of metrics. Overall, the five countries were ranked according to four criteria.

The US is ranked 11 on three of the four measures: access to care, its administration process and the success of treatment. It thus ranks lowest overall, although conversely, the US care process is second. Canada is slightly ahead of the US with an overall ranking of 10, made up in large part by the assessment on access to care and success of treatment and a seventh-placed ranking on the administration process.

Australia and the UK are ranked similarly overall, at three and four; both are let down slightly by their care process; Australia’s access to care is, though, ranked significantly lower. New Zealand, meanwhile, is given slightly lower than average scores on the success of treatment but comes first for its care process, ranking third in the group overall.
