IELTS General Task 1: Mock Test–Visiting a Friend on Holiday

Feb 14, 2025 | IELTS Test

IELTS Writing Task 1 is the part of the test most candidates struggle the most with – whether it is the General or the Academic version, and whether they are non-native or native speakers.

Here is some guidance on how to write an informal letter…

Task Type: Informal Letter
Situation: Planning a Holiday Visit
Timing: 20 minutes
Word Count: At least 150 words

Your Task

You are planning to visit a friend who lives in another country during your holiday.

Write a letter to your friend. In your letter:

  • tell your friend about your holiday plans
  • explain what you would like to do during your visit
  • ask if there is anything you should bring with you

You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:

Dear…….,

How to Structure Your Answer

A clear structure will help your writing feel natural and easy to follow. Here is a suggested outline:

Opening: Greeting and Reason for Writing

Begin with a warm, friendly greeting. Mention your upcoming holiday and explain that you would like to visit your friend.

Paragraph Two: Travel Plans

Provide the details of your planned trip. Include your intended dates, the length of your stay, and ask whether these dates would be convenient.

Paragraph Three: Activities You Would Like to Do

Share some ideas for activities during your visit. These could be things you have discussed before or activities you know your friend enjoys.

Paragraph Four: Questions and Final Thoughts

Ask if there is anything you should bring from your country.

You might also check whether your friend has any suggestions or preferences for the visit. End your letter in a friendly and positive way.

Sample Answer

Dear Emily,

I hope you are doing well. I finally have some time off work in June, and I would love to come and visit you in Sydney if you are available. It has been far too long since we spent time together.

I was thinking of flying out around the 12th of June and staying for about a week. Flights seem cheaper midweek, and I have complete flexibility during that period. Let me know if those dates work for you or if another time would be better.

While I am there, it would be great to do some sightseeing together. I would love to visit the Blue Mountains if you are interested, and of course, spending a few relaxing days at the beach sounds perfect as well. I am happy to fit around your plans.

Is there anything you would like me to bring from the UK? I remember you mentioned missing a few snacks from home last time we spoke. Also, would you prefer me to stay at your place, or would you recommend that I book somewhere nearby?

Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Best wishes,
Ben
