The Question
You are applying for a job and need a reference. Write a letter to your previous boss.
In your letter:
– Give details of the job you are applying for
– Explain why it is important to you
– Suggest what to include in the reference
The Answer
Dear Mr Rogers,
I am writing to ask for your permission to provide your contact details as my referee. I had been working in the company for three years when I left for maternity leave, and you said that you would provide me with a reference when needed.
After giving birth, I have been a full-time mother for a few months but have now received a job offer from an international company with regional headquarters in the city centre. I have been offered a casual part-time job and will work 18 hours a week from home, which is very convenient in my situation.
This job is important to me because it offers flexible hours which will allow me to be there for my child during his early years. Moreover, the position will enable career growth by providing the chance of a full-time job and offering professional development programs overseas.
Could you please include in your reference that I am knowledgeable, punctual and have developed teamwork skills to a significant extent. Also, please mention my approachability and flexibility, which will be crucial in my new role.
I appreciate your time.
Regards,
Mrs Smith
