The Question

The similarity of cultures across the globe is evidence that copying others is a human characteristic.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

The Answer

The majority of people tend to copy one another subconsciously. This tendency enables people to live in harmony and establish social norms and rules. This willingness to fit in has been a driving force of globalisation around the world.

According to psychologists, people are willing to share some behavioural traits to create and maintain social norms. This mimicry brings them a sense of belonging to a community and enables them to feel secure amongst a crowd. As a result, society has established a culture in which people eat, dress and behave similarly. Education constantly reinforces this system by teaching pupils to act with politeness, empathy and respect when communicating with others.

This tendency to replicate is also seen in consumerism. It is fashionable to dress in luxury brands, such as Prada, and to surround ourselves with luxuries to show high income and contentment. People prefer to either travel first-class or purchase high-end vehicles to demonstrate their status. In today’s society, it is crucial to see and be seen. Maintaining consistency is a part of human nature that enables people to fit into society and sustain social constructs.

In conclusion, people’s natural instinct to copy others is self-evident in today’s globalised world. Many customers purchase the same brands and educate their children to aspire to succeed and show empathy. Although this brings uniformity to our lives, this enables us to maintain social norms.
