The Question

In the 21st Century, people are richer and healthier than ever before. However, statistics show that they are also less happy.

What could be the reasons for this?

How can we solve this problem?

The Answer

The 21st Century has seen technological progress and improving living standards. People are wealthier and have access to high-quality healthcare. Nonetheless, they are less happy due to work-related anxieties and excessive entertainment.

The happiness index reveals that even if people have high-income jobs and access to modern medical facilities, their life satisfaction is often low. This is because many professions require employees to work around the clock in physically demanding and emotionally charged environments.  As a result, mature adults can feel exhausted and suffer from chronic fatigue. The solution is to bring the working week down to four or even three days.  Reduced hours will allow employees to recharge and spend quality time with their loved ones.

Another reason for increasing dissatisfaction is that increased riches and advances in technology are allowing those free from the constraints of work to immerse themselves in round-the-clock entertainment.  This means that individuals can come to view the realities of everyday life as mundane. Solving this problem can only be achieved by unplugging ourselves from technology and getting back to nature. We need to get out more, connect with those around us, and celebrate our humanity.

In conclusion, employment and wealth do not equal increased happiness. We all need more time to unplug ourselves from work and technology. We must use the time we gain to reach out to those around us and engage in activities which will build our communities and our sense of self-worth.
